What Does the "Trojan Family" Mean?

If you’ve recently started learning about the University of Southern California or have just been admitted as a new student, you’ve probably heard the phrase “Trojan Family.”

But what exactly does it mean?

In short, the Trojan Family is the global network of alumni, students, faculty, and staff that defines the community, spirit, and lifelong connections of USC.

The USC nickname, “Trojans,” dates back to 1912, when Los Angeles Times sports editor Owen Bird used the term to describe the fighting spirit and determination of USC athletes during a track meet.

"The term 'Trojan' as applied to USC means to me that no matter what the situation, what the odds or what the conditions, the competition must be carried on to the end and those who strive must give all they have and never be weary in doing so."

That spirit continues today through USC’s well-known motto: “Fight On!”

Every USC student automatically becomes part of the Trojan Family. From the moment students step onto campus, they are welcomed into a supportive community that encourages them to uphold USC’s shared values and pursue excellence. Whether in the classroom, residence halls, athletic events, or beyond campus, students build meaningful relationships that help them navigate challenges and achieve their goals. For many students, the Trojan Family becomes a lifelong support system throughout their time at USC and long after graduation.

The Trojan Family also extends far beyond campus through USC’s global alumni network, which includes more than 500,000 living alumni worldwide.
