Time To Get Personal
You’ve heard it a million times. BE YOURSELF! Three syllables, two words, one big impact.
Applying to a university is much more than the GPA, SAT, LOL, etc. It’s about understanding that we want to get to know you in the process. Your grades and scores can only tell us so much and our process doesn’t rely on those two factors, we care about who we’re reviewing. The best thing you can do to stand out in our process is (get ready for it) BE YOURSELF!
We want you to be authentic and honest with us. Listen up, us admissions counselors can always tell when you’re trying to impress us. You’re not being slick and super sneaky. You may feel like answering a certain question on the application a certain way or writing about a certain topic will make the admission counselor favor you. We are impressed when you can be yourself and display that on the application. There is no need to put on an act.
The place where your personality can shine the brightest is the essay. The essay is the place where your voice can be heard the loudest, so take it seriously! I know that you’re totally over writing that 5-paragraph essay and we’re not expecting to read that type of essay. What we are expecting is a sophisticated piece of writing that displays who you are…a true personal statement. Did you notice the bold word? The essay is about you and not anyone else. Often times, we see students writing about something and never talking about themselves. This is the one time in life where it’s alright to be a little self-centered (within reason!).
So, allow yourself to be open and honest with us so throughout the entire application. We know you think that admissions counselors are not real people but I hate to break it to you…we are. We are real people that want to get to know the awesome person that you are.
