Student Perspectives: Why I Chose to Apply to USC
My name is Edie Cingrani and I am majoring in International Relations and the Global Economy in USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. I am minoring in Education Policy through the Price School of Public Policy and the Rossier School of Education. I am also completing a Master’s in Public Diplomacy through the Progressive Degree Program at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. I am from Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
By the end of the summer prior to my senior year of high school, I was prepared to make one of the most important decisions of my life so far, which colleges I planned to apply to that fall. I knew it had to be a university that offered more than just academic rigor. Ultimately, it had to provide an experience, a community and a place where I could grow not only as a student, but as an individual. After months of research, campus tours and applications, the University of Southern California (USC) rose to the top for me. While every student’s path is unique, I found myself drawn to USC for a few reasons that stood out above the rest, including its academic opportunities, Trojan network and its vibrant location in the heart of Los Angeles.
Learning Opportunities
One key aspect that stood out to me about USC was its academic programs. As a tour guide at USC now, I always share with prospective students and families how USC is a school of schools. As an incoming student, I knew I wanted to study International Relations and the Global Economy in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. Although USC Dornsife is my “home” school, I have taken classes in numerous other USC schools, including the Thornton School of Music and Viterbi School of Engineering. My minor in Education Policy is also housed within the Price School of Public Policy and the Rossier School of Education. Each of USC’s schools feature personalized advising, classes and career support for students. All students can access the diverse resources available in these schools.
Even though USC is a large university, I was drawn to the availability of smaller, discussion-based classes where I could interact directly with the professor and fellow students. Through these personal relationships, I have secured hands-on research opportunities with different professors on international climate policy and development. In addition to research, internships, study abroad programs and community-based projects have greatly enhanced my undergraduate education.
Trojan Network
If you ask any Trojan their favorite benefit of being a student, they’ll likely mention the electrifying school spirit. From my first campus tour in high school to my first days as a student to today, I still feel an energy that is impossible to ignore. The sense of pride in being a Trojan is not just something that emerges during major sporting events; it is also interwoven into the very fabric of the university, since campus traditions run deep. There’s nothing quite like standing in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with thousands of fellow students, alumni and fans, all decked out in cardinal and gold, cheering “Fight on!” School spirit isn’t limited to football games or homecoming events, but students experience the way fellow Trojans support each other, whether in the classroom, through student organizations or even professional advice. The encouraging relationships among USC students and the willingness of professors and alumni to assist is invaluable.
Location is Everything
Location is a major consideration for any college-bound student and USC’s setting in the heart of Los Angeles is ideal. Living in such a dynamic city means access to inspiring entertainment, leaders in business and global culture, and activities from museums to musicals to food. Whether exploring beach communities, hiking in the nearby mountains, skiing in the winter or attending major sporting events, there are never-ending possibilities for new experiences. The city’s energy fuels creativity and ambition, making USC a place where students are encouraged to dream big and pursue their passions both inside and outside the classroom. Beyond its vibrant location, USC provides students with unique access to numerous opportunities that are only possible in a city like Los Angeles. The proximity to leading industries, including film, technology, business, entrepreneurship and healthcare, means that internships, networking events and hands-on experiences are always within reach.
When considering a future university home, I challenge everyone to consider how they could not only survive but thrive at each school. When I toured USC, I felt a sense of vibrancy that I knew would result in four years of academic and personal success while also creating a foundation for my future. Fight on!
