Off-Campus Housing
The USC Off-Campus Housing Portal is a tool made to help students find quality off-campus housing, apartments, rooms, and roommate opportunities within a commutable distance of campus in Los Angeles. The portal helps connect students with local landlords who provide safe and convenient housing options near the University of Southern California. Students can browse through different listings in the UPC area, and there is even a section where students can find a roommate. All listings are located within the University’s Department of Public Safety patrol zone and in neighborhoods commonly chosen by USC students.
When searching the portal for housing, students can either scroll through the listings or pinpoint them on a map. Results can be narrowed down through search factors like price, lease length, distance from campus, number of bedrooms and accommodations. If you already have friends you want to live with, you can cross that off of your to-do list and start searching for housing together. If not, the roommate portal gives students the option to search for a roommate through different categories like social levels, activity and energy levels, age and program.
As you begin your off-campus housing search, it’s important to think beyond just the apartment itself. Consider what your daily routine usually looks like. Do you want to be close to campus? Do you prefer walking, biking, or using public transportation to get to campus? Some students prioritize proximity to campus, while others may opt for more space or lower rent slightly farther away.
Budget is another key factor. Be sure to account for not only rent, but also utilities, groceries, transportation and other living expenses. Some listings may include utilities, while others do not, so always read the details carefully. You should also think about what kind of living environment works best for you. Do you prefer a quieter space for studying or a more social household? Living with roommates can be a great way to build community and split costs, but it’s important to find people whose lifestyles align with yours.
It’s recommended that you start your search early. Off-campus housing near USC is in high demand, so options tend to go quickly. Beginning your search several months in advance will give you more choices and flexibility. If possible, you can also visit the property (or take a virtual tour) before signing a lease to get a better sense of the space and the neighborhood.
Finding off-campus housing may feel overwhelming at first, but, with the right tools and preparation, it can be a smooth and rewarding process. The USC Off-Campus Housing portal is a great place to start, helping you find a space that fits your needs while staying connected to the Trojan community.
