One of the best perks of going to college in Los Angeles is the close proximity to the beach at all times. Whether you need a study break or an excuse to leave campus for a day, or are just looking for a fun adventure, LA’s coastline has something for everyone.
USC’s campus is just a short drive or metro ride from the Pacific Ocean, making beach days an easy addition to your college experience. From iconic boardwalks to quiet stretches of sand, here are a few beaches that are worth adding to your bucket list.
Zuma Beach
When many people picture California beaches, they’re imagining somewhere like Zuma Beach. Known for its wide shoreline, clean sand, and beautiful blue water, Zuma is one of Malibu’s most popular beaches. It’s a perfect spot for swimming, playing beach games or having a picnic with friends. Because of its size, there’s usually plenty of room to spread out, even on busy weekends.
Malibu Surfrider Beach
If surfing is on your college bucket list, Malibu Surfrider Beach is the place to go. Located next to the historic Malibu Pier, this beach is internationally known for its waves that attract surfers from around the world. Even if you don’t surf, it’s fun to watch experienced riders catch wave after wave while enjoying the coastal scenery. Afterward, explore the pier or grab a meal nearby before heading back to campus.
Will Rogers State Beach
Located just north of Santa Monica, Will Rogers State Beach offers a quieter alternative to its busy neighbors. The long stretch of sand is ideal for volleyball, jogging or just spending a peaceful afternoon by the water. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day without the larger crowds, this is an excellent option. The nearby Pacific Coast Highway also makes it an easy stop on a Malibu trip.
Santa Monica State Beach
Santa Monica combines beautiful ocean views with some of LA’s most recognizable attractions. The wide beach offers plenty of space to relax, while the nearby Santa Monica Pier features an amusement park, arcade games, restaurants, and unbeatable sunset views. Third Street Promenade is just a few blocks away and offers shopping, dining and entertainment throughout the day. Downtown Santa Monica is also easily accessible by taking the Metro E-Line directly from USC’s campus.
Venice Beach
No trip to Los Angeles feels complete without experiencing Venice Beach. Famous for its colorful boardwalk, street performers, murals, and skate park, Venice is one of the city’s most unique destinations. You can watch skateboarders show off their skills, browse local art vendors or simply people-watch as musicians and performers bring the boardwalk to life. If you’re feeling active, rent a bike and ride along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail toward Santa Monica.
Dockweiler Beach
Dockweiler Beach stands out for one reason that makes it especially memorable: it’s one of the few beaches in Los Angeles where bonfires are allowed in designated fire rings. Gather a group of friends, roast marshmallows and enjoy an evening by the ocean while watching the sunset. Since it’s located near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), you’ll also get a clear view of planes taking off and landing overhead—a surprisingly fun sight that makes Dockweiler uniquely LA.
Manhattan Beach
If you’re looking for the classic Southern California beach town, Manhattan Beach is hard to beat. The wide sandy shoreline is perfect for sunbathing, beach volleyball and long walks along the water. Don’t miss the Manhattan Beach Pier, where you can enjoy ocean views and visit the small aquarium at the end of the pier. Downtown Manhattan Beach is also home to several restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon walking around by yourself or with friends.
These are just a few of the amazing beaches that students have access to in the greater Los Angeles area. Whether you’re watching the sunset in Malibu, biking between Venice and Santa Monica, or walking down the Manhattan Beach Pier, each beach offers something different. As a USC student, you will have countless opportunities to discover everything Southern California has to offer. So pack your beach bag, invite a few friends and start exploring one of the greatest coastlines in the world.
