AXS Companion - A Tool to Conquer the Common App
Let’s be transparent for a second: applying to college is a daunting process that many have trouble unpacking and deciphering. You hear from various universities that they simply want to get to know you and your story on the application; but, once you start, you suddenly realize that maybe this process isn’t as straightforward as you were led to believe. You see what feels like a million questions coming straight at you and are maybe even unsure where to begin. What does this question mean? What are they really asking? What if I answer something incorrectly and forfeit my chance of being admitted into my dream school?
As much as we try googling the answers and end up falling victim to Reddit, it’s hard understanding what information is accurate or an assumption when working on a college application.
There are many tools and resources out there, but which tools are truly helpful and won’t cost an arm and a leg to access?
AXS Companion is a free, online resource created by professional education consultants with Oregon State University to assist prospective applicants in filling out the Common Application, section by section. AXS Companion strives to provide equal access to all students preparing to apply to colleges via the Common App. It breaks down each part of the application with over 50 step-by-step tutorial videos and useful tips. It also connects you to other resources. Topics covered include how to write your personal essay, how to complete the family section, how to submit letters of recommendation, and much more.
If it wasn’t stressed earlier, this resource is FREE, meaning that there is no cost to accessing each video and its content. In addition, it doesn’t require a subscription or login (one less password to have to try to remember, am I right?). You can also access AXS Companion via phone, laptop and/or tablet.
Not only is AXS Companion focused on strengthening your college application but also educating students about financial aid topics, such as understanding what need-based aid is, navigating loans, and more.
Still unsure about what certain words mean? AXS Companion also provides an extensive glossary of college admission terms to help you understand what specific things mean, such as the difference between Early Action and Early Decision. There is even a Parent Section where your parents/guardians can inform themselves on what this journey looks like and how to best support you. (Fun fact: their content is also available in Spanish for our native speakers!)
AXS Companion is a truly wonderful resource when it comes to helping you navigate your college application. So, make sure to take advantage of it as you prepare for this journey! Who knows, maybe you might see our very own USC Vice President of Enrollment Management on there.
