Athletic Traditions at USC
Athletic Traditions at USC: A Legacy of Excellence and School Spirit
Looking back at last year’s 2024 Paris Olympics, and looking ahead to the upcoming March Madness tournament, it felt appropriate to reflect on the history and traditions of athletics at USC!
At the University of Southern California, athletics are more than just a part of campus life. They are woven into the very fabric of the Trojan spirit. Whether it’s a football game at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum or a meet at one of the nation’s top track and field programs, USC athletes and fans share an unparalleled pride in their accomplishments. For prospective students, USC offers the rare combination of academic excellence and athletic achievement, and our rich sports traditions are a key part of what makes this university so special.
As an admission counselor, I have the unique opportunity to share with you not only the incredible academic opportunities at USC but also the sense of community and pride that comes with being part of the Trojan family—especially through our athletic traditions. Here’s a closer look at USC’s athletic history and the traditions that make our campus feel alive with school spirit, every season.
USC’s Athletic Legacy: A History of Excellence
USC has been a powerhouse in college athletics for over a century. From football to basketball to track and field, our athletes have not only excelled at the collegiate level but also made lasting impacts on the professional world. USC is home to 113 NCAA championships, one of the highest in the nation, and our athletic programs have produced some of the most legendary athletes in history.
Football holds a special place in USC's heart, with the Trojans claiming 11 national championships and producing some of the sport’s greatest stars, such as Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Marcus Allen. They’ve had 13 undefeated seasons including eight perfect seasons, and 37 conference championships. USC has produced eight Heisman Trophy winners and 531 NFL draft picks, with the Heismans being the most all-time by a university, and NFL draft picks only one behind Notre Dame's 532. The Trojans have 55 bowl appearances, 39 of which are among the New Year's Six Bowls. With a record of 35–20, USC has the second highest all-time post-season winning percentage of schools with 50 or more bowl appearances.
But success doesn’t stop with football. USC boasts championship-winning teams in a variety of sports including basketball, baseball, volleyball, water polo and track and field. In fact, USC’s women’s and men’s track and field teams have combined for 31 NCAA titles, making us one of the most successful schools in the nation for track and field.
Being a student at USC means you’re walking in the footsteps of champions. Our commitment to athletic excellence is reflected in everything from state-of-the-art training facilities to our passionate student-athletes who balance the demands of elite competition with their academic goals.
Trophies: Symbols of Victory
USC's athletic history is marked by iconic trophies that represent fierce rivalries and traditions. The Victory Bell symbolizes the rivalry between USC and UCLA, awarded to the winning team of their annual football game. The Jeweled Shillelagh is a prized possession in the rivalry between USC and Notre Dame, with the trophy’s jeweled markings representing each team’s victories. Finally, the Gauntlet Trophy, given to the winner of the annual football matchup, commemorates the competitive rivalry between USC and Stanford. These trophies are not only symbols of competition but also of the pride and legacy of USC’s athletic excellence.
Game Day Traditions: The Heart of Trojan Spirit
There’s no better way to experience USC’s athletic culture than to immerse yourself in the game day traditions that bring our campus to life. Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or someone looking to join the Trojan family, game days are an exciting part of the USC experience.
1. The Trojan Marching Band
One of the most iconic symbols of USC athletics is the Spirit of Troy—the Trojan Marching Band. Known as one of the best college marching bands in the country (they’ll say “in the history of the universe”), the Trojan Marching Band’s performances at USC football games are legendary. From the moment they step onto the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the band fills the stadium with energy and excitement. Their rendition of "Conquest" is an anthem that stirs the hearts of Trojans everywhere, signaling that game day has officially begun.
The Trojan Marching Band has made numerous memorable appearances on TV shows and at major events, showcasing their talent and school spirit. The Trojan Marching Band performed in the prestigious Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1994, showcasing their skills to a national audience. The Trojan Marching Band performed at the halftime show for Super Bowl XXVII between the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys, bringing their iconic music to one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The Trojan Marching Band made a memorable appearance on this popular TV sitcom when they played during a scene featuring the main characters attending a college event. It was a fun crossover moment for fans of both USC and the show. The Trojan Marching Band was the first college band to perform at a U.S. Presidential Inauguration, playing in President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade—a historic and unforgettable event for both the band and USC.
2. Traveler, the Trojan Horse
No USC game would be complete without Traveler, our beloved Trojan horse. At the beginning of each home football game, a rider dressed in full Trojan armor leads Traveler onto the field, creating a dramatic and powerful entrance that gets the crowd on their feet. This tradition dates back to 1961, and the horse remains one of the most enduring and distinctive symbols of USC athletics. It’s a reminder of the strength, honor and pride that define USC and its athletic programs.
3. "Fight On!"
The USC fight song, "Fight On," is one of the most recognizable college songs in the country. Played at nearly every sporting event, it captures the heart and soul of USC fans. Students, alumni and fans from all walks of life come together to sing this anthem, creating an atmosphere that can only be described as electric. Whether you're in the stadium or watching from home, “Fight On” is a rallying cry that unites Trojans and reminds everyone why we’re so proud of our athletic heritage.
The Coliseum: A Legendary Venue
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home to USC football since 1923, is more than just a stadium. It’s a living piece of history. Hosting numerous national championships, Olympic Games, and Super Bowls, the Coliseum stands as one of the most iconic sports venues in the world.
For USC students, the Coliseum is an integral part of the college experience. There's a sense of pride and nostalgia that comes with stepping into this historic arena, where legends have been made and unforgettable moments have been etched into the pages of history. The Coliseum was the site of the very first Super Bowl, where the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, marking the beginning of the NFL's biggest event. One of the most iconic music events in the Coliseum’s history was The Beatles' performance in 1966. It was part of their final American tour, and the band played to a crowd of over 50,000 fans, marking a turning point in rock history.
The energy in the Coliseum on game day is contagious, and it’s an experience that you’ll remember for a lifetime. As a USC student, you’ll have access to some of the best seats in the house, cheering on your team with your fellow Trojans.
The Olympics: Triumph and Excellence
USC is the most successful colleges in terms of Olympic medals, with its alumni winning over 300 medals (including gold, silver, and bronze) since the modern Games began. The university has produced numerous Olympic champions in various sports, particularly in track and field, swimming and water polo. USC athletes have competed in every Summer Olympics since 1904, and the school has been represented by legendary figures such as swimmer Esther Williams, track and field star Allyson Felix and basketball player DeMar DeRozan. USC also had a notable role in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, when it served as a key host institution. The Trojan tradition continues to thrive, with many current athletes training at USC and contributing to its Olympic legacy. We are also very excited that USC will be a major venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics, providing top-tier facilities for athletes and spectators alike!
Becoming Part of the Trojan Family: Athletic Involvement Beyond the Field
While USC’s varsity athletes are the stars of our sports programs, there are countless ways for all students to get involved in athletics and contribute to the Trojan spirit. USC’s club sports, intramural leagues and recreational programs offer opportunities to participate in everything from soccer to ultimate frisbee to swimming. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking to stay active and meet new people, there’s a place for you in the USC athletic community.
Additionally, USC students enjoy exclusive access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Lyon Center, Uytengsu Aquatics Center and the Galen Center (home of USC basketball and volleyball). These world-class facilities make it easy for students to stay fit, try new activities and support their fellow Trojans in the process.
Support for USC Athletes: Academic and Athletic Balance
USC is known for its commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics. As a Trojan, you’ll see firsthand how our athletes thrive not only in their sports but also in the classroom. The academic support available to USC student-athletes is second to none, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed in all aspects of their education and training.
Whether it’s tutoring, mentoring or career services, USC offers a well-rounded experience that nurtures student-athletes both on and off the field. This dedication to holistic development makes USC a unique place where students can excel in all aspects of life, creating a community that values teamwork, discipline and perseverance.

As an admission counselor, I’m proud to say that USC is not just about academics. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s about coming together as Trojans to support our athletes, celebrate our victories and embody the spirit of teamwork and excellence that defines USC.
So, when you’re considering your college experience, think about the traditions that make USC unique. Think about the Coliseum, the Trojan Marching Band and the thrill of cheering on the Trojans with your fellow students. Because, at USC, athletics are not just a tradition—they are a way of life.
